Is there anything nicer than receiving a beautifully handwritten message through the post?

Email, WhatsApp, Social Media - they are all great, and have made keeping in touch across the miles so much easier, but there’s nothing quite like hearing that flutter as an envelope drops through the door and plops onto your doormat (and in my world then comes the race to get to it before the dog shreds it to a million pieces!). Then examining the stamp (ooh, it’s ‘foreign’) and giving the envelope a quick squeeze while wondering who it could be from…

It is so so lovely to know that someone has taken time out of their busy day to sit down and write you a letter. Has put pen to paper just because they wanted to share a little part of their world with you. Some say letter writing is a dying art, but I don’t think it is - I think it is coming back into its own.

So why not take a few minutes out of your busy day to send someone you love a letter…you just might make their day, like this little card made mine.

You will no doubt have gathered by this point in the proceedings that THE LITTLE BOOKSHOP WILL BE CLOSED TODAY (Thursday 23rd) - sorry - but I have high hopes of being open tomorrow…possibly…maybe…we will see…watch this space!

Funny thing is, pre-Covid and pre-turning-50 I would almost definitely have dragged myself to work regardless of how I felt. But the last couple of years have taught me that slowing down and listening to your body is actually a good thing, and not a sign of weakness. Funny what a world-wide pandemic and reaching half a century can do for you, isn’t it?! Sadly I’ve still not learned how to poach an egg or play the saxophone, but hopefully there’s time for those yet!

Also - if one is going to feel a bit poorly and lie about in bed, or on the sofa with one’s dog, then one couldn’t be in better company than @mattzhaig - he is a marvel and a tonic.

Back in the summer of 2023 some of my most favourite humans went on a jolly to Bath (lucky old things), and very kindly brought me back this little tote-bag full of happiness!

Now, because I’m me and have the most terrible problem with saving everything ‘for best’ - or possibly just keeping things till the ‘time is right’, but then time passes and it never is quite the right time and all those beautiful things I could have been enjoying have been lingering in a drawer or cupboard feeling unloved and forgotten - well, because of that, I have just decided, quite on the spur of the moment, that enough is enough. No longer shall my pretties lurk in dark and dusty corners waiting for the moment to be right - no! - because the RIGHT MOMENT could well be RIGHT NOW!

So, I have sharpened two of my limited edition Blackwing X Independent Bookshop pencils and dug out the Bath tote-bag of happiness and shall commence to write a no doubt long and joyful list of all the books I would still like to read from @persephonebooks while casting an eye on the latest recommendations from @mrbsemporium - and no doubt having a happy browse of @hatchardspiccadilly

I’m currently having to fight @humphrey_nl for the LAST BOX OF TISSUES as he has a penchant for shredding them the minute he spy’s them unprotected. Snotty or clean, he’s not fussy, he’ll shred any unattended tissue in a heartbeat! And loo roll, but that’s another story…

This is a somewhat long-winded way of me saying THE LITTLE BOOKSHOP IS CLOSED TODAY (Wednesday 22nd) - and might be closed tomorrow too, but I’ll let you know. Sorry! I am FULL OF THE COLD and have the humour to match. If you see me walking the dog (note to self: should have got a goldfish) give me a wide berth, I am definitely full of germs and not afraid to share them…
